I am Mi Yan, and I am originally from Beijing, China. Before I came to the US in 2018, I ran my social enterprise in China on environmental education for ten years. I graduated from Cornell University in 2021 with my master's degree in environmental education. Then, I became an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. My family and I moved to Gainesville, FL in 2025.
My passion for teaching English reading began when I became a father. As an immigrant from China, I want my daughter to be fluent in both English and Chinese. While exploring bilingual education through books, research articles, and courses at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I discovered how crucial strong English reading skills are for children in immigrant families. Learning English often requires extra effort for these families, so in October 2023, I launched an online program specifically designed to help immigrant children improve their English, with a strong focus on reading. Using Reading A-to-Z leveled books, I guide students through structured lessons to build their language skills. Every week, I host two 45-minute live sessions where students engage in reading discussions, practice comprehension, and gain confidence in speaking English. Today, our team supports over 70 students, and the program continues to grow, helping more immigrant families each day!
As once an international student studying in the US and a faculty at an American university, I design my English classes differently. I know the language challenges that students who speak English as a second language may face when studying in the US, and I want to help them conquer these barriers when they start learning English as a kid. I am also dedicated to making my program a science-based program. Thanks to the advancement of cognitive science, psychology, and linguistics, so much research has been conducted in language acquisition in the past two decades. Integrating the latest research and best practices into the course development will be a core of IvyRead. Last but not least, I blend STEM education and environmental education in my English lessons. Reading is never a single skill. It is the core of literacy and scaffolds the students' future studies. We use materials about science and the environment to improve students' academic achievement.
To serve a growing number of young students, we are looking for friendly, reliable, and experienced tutors to provide online English pronunciation, reading discussion, and fluency classes in the 2025 spring and summer semester. We are committed to providing quality online tutoring to our students as well as offering our tutors an excellent compensation rate and flexible hours.
