I am Mi Yan, and I am originally from Beijing, China. Before I came to the US in 2018, I ran my social enterprise in China on environmental education for ten years. I graduated from Cornell University in 2021 with my master's degree in environmental education. Then, I became an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. My family and I moved to Middleton, WI, last summer.
My interest in reading began when I became a dad. As an immigrant from China, I want my daughter to be able to speak both English and Chinese. After I read books and journal articles and took classes on bilingual education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I found bilingual education is a fascinating world. After talking with my family and friends in China, I realized that many families want to help their kids acquire English as a second language but struggle with good resources and methods. So, starting this October, I started an online program to teach English to Chinese elementary school students. I used Reading A-to-Z, the leveled reading books widely used in American elementary schools, to teach kids English. Every week, I offer two 45-minute live classes to students to discuss reading-related questions and encourage them to speak English. Now, I am teaching four levels with 50 students. The number of my students is still growing!
As once an international student studying in the US and a faculty at an American university, I design my English classes differently. I know the language challenges that Chinese students may face when studying in the US, and I want to help them conquer these barriers when they start learning English as a kid. I am also dedicated to making my program a science-based program. Thanks to the advancement of cognitive science, psychology, and linguistics, so much research has been conducted in language acquisition in the past two decades. Integrating the latest research and best practices into the course development will be a core of IvyRead. Last but not least, I blend STEM education and environmental education in my English lessons. Reading is never a single skill. It is the core of literacy and scaffolds the students' future studies. We use materials about science and the environment to improve students' academic achievement.
To serve a growing number of young students, we are looking for friendly, reliable, and experienced tutors to provide online English pronunciation, reading discussion, and fluency classes in the 2024 fall semester. We are committed to providing quality online tutoring to our students as well as offering our tutors an excellent compensation rate and flexible hours.
